Memory and Cognition Flashcards
What is cognition?
It is the highest order of brain function; the integration of all sensory info
What is the McGurk effect?
Auditory input is reliant on some visual context (fa)
Which area of the brain is responsible for the formation of memory?
Hippocampus
Which area of the brain is responsible for the storage of memories?
Cortex
Which area of the brain is responsible for the searching and access of memory?
Thalamus
What is the limbic system responsible for?
Reward seeking
Punishment avoidance
Selection of what is important to remember (some input from frontal cortex)
What are the components of the limbic system?
Cingulate gyrus (contains hippocampus) Amygdala Hypothalamus Thalamus Olfactory cortex
What is immediate/sensory memory?
Lasts a few seconds
Based on different sensory modalities
What is short-term memory?
Lasts seconds to hours
Brain’s “post-it note” (remember numbers, calculations etc.)
What is intermediate long-term memory?
Probably in between short-term and long-term?
What is long term memory?
Increased amplitude of EPSP
Declarative or procedural memories
What is anterograde amnesia?
Cannot form new memories
What is retrograde amnesia?
Cannot access old memories
Why is smell so strongly linked with memory?
The olfactory tract goes to the primary olfactory cortex which has strong connections to the amygdala and hippocampus
What is Korsakoff’s syndrome?
An amnestic disorder caused by thiamine deficiency associated with prolonged ingestion of alcohol
