Memory 2 Flashcards
Describe shallow processing (Craik and Lockhart’s model) and what does it mean
Shallow processing is structural (what does it resemble) or phonetic (what does it sound like). Shallow processing is when memory trace is weaker (more likely to forget info).
Memory trace
Memory trace is how well something is remembered.
Chunking
Chunking is grouping bits of info together.
Strengths of Craik and Lockhart’s model
Strengths include: explains well that if we understand info we are more likely to remember it and explains well that longer we consider and analyse info, the more we remember.
Weaknesses in Craik and Lockhart’s model
Weaknesses include: longer time it takes to process info doesn’t always lead to better recall. So depth of processing doesn’t always help us remember.
Difficulty in defining what ‘deep’ processing actually involves
Doesn’t account for individual differences
Factors affecting depth of processing
Factors affecting depth of processing are
Amount of consideration given to info
Is info understood
Whether info has meaning
Deep processing
Deep processing is semantic how it is applied
