Membranes Flashcards
What are the components of membranes?
PhosCholesterol
Why does cholesterol increase at the extremes?
Why does cholesterol increase at the extremes because you want the cell to be more rigid at the extremes.
What attributes of fat impact membrane permeability?
Length of hydrocarbon tails and saturation of bonds.
Longer tails more dense membranes
More saturation more dense membranes
What membrane would have the lowest permeability?
A lipid bi-layer with long and saturated hydrocarbon tails
What impact does cholesterol have in permeability?
It lowers it.
Why is cholesterol important in extreme temps?
It helps maintain the integrity of the cell.
When happens when membranes become more fluid?
They also become more permeable
What does cholesterol do at extreme warmer temperatures?
It is a glue to prevent membranes from become too fluid
What does cholesterol do at extreme cold temperature?
It separates the phospholips to keep them from crystalizing at lower temperatures.
How does the phospholipid bilayer typically move?
They are in constant lateral motion but rarely flip to the other side.
Do archaea have organelles?
No
Do archaea have eukaryote like gene structures and ribosomes?
Yes
What are ion channels?
Same as facilitated diffusion, except for ions
What does uniport mean?
On substance flows in one direction
what does simper mean?
Two or more substances in one direction
