Meiosis/ genetics Flashcards
Gametes
A reproductibe cell
Chromotids
One of the two identical halves of a chromosome
Zygotes
A fertilized egg
Meiosis
Cell division in sexually reproddcing organisms that producers gametes
Mitosis
a type of cell division that results in two daughter cells each having the same number and kind of chromosomes as the parent nucleus, typical of ordinary tissue growth.
Chromosome
structure found inside the nucleus of a cell. A chromosome is made up of proteins and DNA organized into genes.
Homologous chromosome
Pair of cells in diploid chromosome that have similar genes but not necessarily identical.
Cell cycle
The cycle in a cell that cause it to divide into two daughter cells.
Binary vision
Asexual reproduction where a body splits into two.
Asexual reprocution
Reproduction that does not involve the fusion of gametes or change in the number of chromosomes.
Cytokinesis
the cytoplasmic division of a cell at the end of mitosis or meiosis, bringing about the separation into two daughter cells.
Spermatogensis
the origin and development of the sperm cells within the male reproductive organs, the testes.
Oogenesis
the production or development of an ovum.
Sister chromatids
The identical copies formed by DNA replication of a chromosome. Or one half of a duplicated chromosome.
Maternal Chromosomes
A pair of chromosomes from the mother
Parental chromosomes
A pair of chromosomes from a father
Fertilization
Union of sperm into egg cell
Crossing over
The exchange of genetic material during sexual reproduction.
Gene linkage
The tendency of of DNA sequences that are close together to be inherited together.
