meiosis Flashcards
meiosis
the DNA replicates so there are 2 identical copies of each chromosome, called chromatids
DNA condenses to form a double armed chromosome made from 2 sister chromatid
the chromosomes arrage each other in homologous pairs
first division is the homologous pairs are splitted, halving the chromosome numbers
second the division the apirs of sister chromatid are seperated
2 new daughter cell that are genetically different are produced
which are called gametes
2 ways that make gametes genetically different
crossing over
independent assortment
crossing over
1)homologous pairs of chromosomes come together and pair up
2) 2 of the chromotds in each homologous pair twist around each other
the twisted bits are break off their original strand and rejoin onto the other chromatid, recombining their genetical material
3)chromatids have same genes but different combination of alleles
independent assortment
4 daughter cells fromed from meiosis have completely different combination of chromosome
all your cells have a combination from your parents, half from your mum and half from your dad.
when gametes are produced, diff commbination of maternal and paternal chromosome go into each cell
position of a gene
loci
linked gene
the closer together the loci of 2 genes are the more close, more likely to be linked
