gene regulation Flashcards
operon
grp of genes under the sme regulatory mechanism are all transcibed in one single unit
proteins to break down lactose is only made
when lactose is present
structure of lac operon
promoter region
operator region
3 structural genes : lacZ
lacY
lacA
promoter region is where
RNA polymerase binds
lac I codes for
repressor protein that prevents transcription
operator region
repressor protein binds to the operator region to prevent transcription
when lactose is absent
lac genes are repressed and genes are switched off ( THIS IS CUZ LAC I IS ALWAYS ON AND PRODUCTION OF REPRESSOR PROTEINS ARE ALWAYS ON)
prevents RNA polymerase from being able to bind due to repressor region attaching to the operator region
lactose is present
lactose binds to the repressor and it releases the repressor therefore, RNA polymerase can bind to the promoter and initates the transcription of lac genes
