vit B12 or folate deficiency

A
- hydroxocabalamin (vit b12) at intervals up to 3MT
- tx initiated frequent IM inj to replenish stores then maintenance

what causes folate deficiency
A
- poor nutrition
- pregnancy
- antiepileptics

folate deficiency tx
A
folic acid supplmentation for 4 months

if emergency tx
A
- give both hydoxocobalamin and folic acid while waiting for plasma assay results
- don’t give folic acid alone if undiagnosed can cause neuropathy
