what is meditation ?
Meditation is an ancient practace that has existed long before the time of the Buddha - meditation focus’s on principles of deep concentration and contemplation
what are the two broad types of meditation within Buddhisum
Samatha meditation
Vipassana meditation
define Samatha meditation
Samatha meditation is a type of meditation that aims to uplift the mind and is usually done throough contrating ones attention towards one thing such as breath or an object
define vipassana meditation
this type of meditation aims to atchive a deep understanding or insight around the true nature of reality - atchived through contemplating concepts
what is the goal of meditation
The overrding goal of meditation is all around transforming the mind into something better
this can be seen in samatha meditation as the mind is transformed into becoming more energised
what does an indevidual need to overcome in order to meditate
first a person needs to overcome the five hinderances
list 3 out of the five hinderances
sloth
ill will
doubt
how does one overcome the 5 hinderances
by cultivating metta
what is a beutiful friendship in buddhisum
Kalyana mitrata - someone who acts a spiritual guide
why is having a kalyana mitrata important for learning to meditate
when meditating one will face physical and phycological experiences or issues to overcome it is helpfull to have someone who has experienced it before to help guide you
what are the alternate postitions for meditation
there are a number of different postitions in which an indevidual can meditate in. The position itself doesn’t nessesarly matter so long as the indevidual feels confortable and can meditate effectivly for an extended period of time.
the most common position is the full lotus- requires flexability

what are the aspects of the eightfold path that need to be cultivated in order to best preform meditation
right mindfulness - this involves careful observation of ones surroundings, keeping the indevidual connected with the present moment
right effort - right effort is important in order to even initiate in meditation in the first place - also can help prevent unskillful states of mind that are not involved with meditation
right concentatration - The cultivation of the power of concentration comes from fully focusing on one aspect or concept for an extended period of time, this can remove distractions and prevent unskillful states of mind
