Buddhisum on abortion, genetic engeneering and euthanasia Flashcards
what is the core beleif in Buddhisum with regards to human life
Buddhists view human life as especially important as the human realm of existance is the only one in which posative karma can be generated and Nirvana can be attained.
what would the traditional Buddhist view on abortion be
Buddhists traditionally and typically are of the asserion that human life begins at contraception and therefore abortion in the equivalent of taking a human life
what rule did the Buddha make around abortion or acts of a similar nature
In the Vinaya rules the buddha stated that any monk or nun who deliberatly brings about the death of a foetus must be expelled from the monastery
what did the Dali Lama recently state on abortion making things more leanient
The Dali Lama believed in cases in which the unborn child will havea disability of it the birth will be seriously damage or kill the parent then in those cases accaptions can be made
what is the main Buddhist beleif with regards to gentic engeneering
Buddhists beleive tghat gentic eneneering can be good so long as it is done to benefit others
what actually is gentic eneneering
Genetic eneneering means to manipulate the developing foetus to obtain a desirable outcome
broadly what is the buddhist view upon genetic eneneering
Usign genetic eneering to help people would be following principles of metta and karuna - also preventing the suffering of others would also lead to to generation of posative karma
what about in cases where genetic eneneering may be used to atchive desirable character trates out of a child e.g hair type or intellect
This would be a form of tanha (craving) which would result in (dukkha or suffering)
Broeadly speaking what is Buddhist view on euthanasia
In the Vinaya (rules made by the Buddha for the monastics) it states that suiside is morally wrong, this rule has now been updated to include euthanasia
why do Buddhists disagree with euthanasia
Human life is preious and should never be taken
what is an arguement which might suggest that euthanaisa would be good
taking a life of someone who is greatly sufering, this has posative intention and is therefore a skillfull action generating posative karma
