Medicine- Hematology Flashcards

Q

What happens to the EPO, Plasma volume, RBC mass and SaO2 in Polycythemia Vera (JAK2 mutation)

A

Plasma Volume & RBC mass will increase, EPO will decrease and SaO2 will be normal

A mutation in the JAK2 gene leads to uncontrolled, EPO-independent proliferation of the myeloid cell lines, resulting in increased blood cell mass. In patients with PV, increased red blood cell mass suppresses secretion of EPO by the kidneys, resulting in low EPO levels, which is an important diagnostic marker of the disease.

Q

What is the strongest predictor of poor prognosis in CLL?
