Therapeutic Uses
- GAD, panic disorder
- Seizure disorders
- Insomnia
- Muscle spasm
- Alcohol withdrawal
- Induction of anesthesia
- amnesic prior to surgery or procedures

Prototype- alprazolam (Xanax)
Others: Valium, Ativan, Librium, Tranxene, Serax, Klonopin

Complications
- CNS depression, sedation, light-headedness, ataxia,
- Anterograde amnesia- difficulty recalling events that occur after dosing.
- Oral Toxicity- drowsiness, lethargy, confusion
- IV toxicity- RR depresion, severe hypo tension, cardiac arrest

Contraindications
- Pregnancy category D
- Schedule IV
- Contraindicated in sleep apnea, RR depression, or glaucoma
- use cautiously in liver disease
- generally short term due to dependence.

- Trauma and stressor disorders, PTSD.

Complications
CNS effects such as dizziness, nausea, headache, light-headedness, agitation.

Contraindications
- Pregnancy Category B
- not recommended for women breastfeeding
- contraindicated with MAOI antidepressants for 14 days after MAOIsa are discontinued- Hypertensive crisis.
