Democratic
This style supports group interaction and decision making to solve problems.
Leadership Styles:
- Democratic
- Laissez-faire
- Autocratic
Laissez-faire
The group process progresses without any attempt by the leader to control the direction.
Autocratic
The leader completely controls the direction and structure of the group without allowing group interaction or decision making to solve problems.
Group norm:
The way the group behaves during sessions, and over time, it provides structure for the group.
Ex. Group members may raise their hand to be recognized by the leader before they speak. Or all members sit in the same seat for each session.
Hidden Agenda
Some group members (or the leader) may have goals different from the stated group goals that may disrupt group processes.
Ex. 3 members may try to embarrass another member whom they dislike.
Phases of Group Development:
- Initial Phase
- Working phase
- Termination Phase
Initial Phase
Primary focus- Define the purpose and goals of the group
- The group leader sets a tone of respect, trust, and confidentiality among members
- Members get to know each other and the group leader
- There’s a discussion about termination.
Working Phase
Primary focus- Promote problem-solving skills to facilitate behavioral changes. Power and control issues may dominate in this phase.
- Therapeutic communication to encourage group work toward meeting goals
- Members take informal roles within group, may interfere or favor progress towards goals
Termination Phase
Primary Focus- This marks the end of the group sessions
- Group members discuss termination issues
- The leader summarizes work of the group and individual contributions.
Autonomy
The right of clients to make decisions about their own healthcare
Nonmaleficence
Doing no harm to others
Beneficence
Engaging in and fostering helpful actions and behaviors
Responsibilities of Effective Leaders
- Define group norms
- Set realistic expectations
- Set standards for performance
- Maintain cohesiveness as new members are introduced.

- Coordinator
