What are the 9 rights of med administration?
Right patient, right dose, right medication, right time, right route of administration, right documentation, right patient teaching, right to know, right to refuse
What would you do if you are unfamiliar with a medication that is prescribed to your patient?
look up the medication in the drug guide
What is the first thing you do when you get in the room?
wash hands and put on gloves
What are 3 sites to administer an IM med? what are the landmarks?
deltoid: 2/3 fingers below acromion process, put fingers into V shape (like deltoid shape) and site is in the center of that;
vastus lateralis: outer middle third of thigh;
ventrogluteal: palm on greater trochanter ( thumb facing towards anterior of body), index finger on anterior superior iliac spine with a V between index and middle finger, site is between knuckles of index and middle finger in V
What are 3 sites to administer a SQ medication? What are the landmarks?
outer aspect of arm (fatty area), the abdomen (at least 2 inches for umbilicus), anterior thighs
What are appropriate sites to administer insulin?
SQ sites, 2 inches from umbilicus, outer aspect of arm, anterior thighs, upper buttocks
What are appropriate sites to administer heparin?
2 inches from umbilicus, anterior thigh, NOT outer arm

5/8 or 1/2 inch

1ml TB syringe

.5-3ml depending on amount needed

When do you aspirate?
only IM, and not with vaccines (says on paper but we didnt learn to aspirate)

non-narcotic analgesic
What is the classification for Ketorolac?
NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs)
What is the classification of Hydromorphone?
Narcotic/ Opioid
what is the classification for Furosemide?
Diuretic, Electrolytic and water balance agent
What classification is Insulin Regular?
Anti-diabetic

Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor, used to lower bp
What is the classification for digoxin?
anti-arrhythmic, inotropic (modifies force or speed of contraction of muscles)
