Q

What does the microbiology look at in a pleural tap

Why would you need that?

A
  1. stain for neutrophils or mononucluar cell
    • not really detailled for mononuclear)
    • send to cytology if you really want to know
  2. do a gram stain and can tell you whether it is gram postitive or negative
  3. culture- sensitivity, what it is

Q

What are the differences between gram postitive adn gram negative bacteria?

A

positive have a thick peptidoglycan cell wall

negative have a thin peptidoglycan cell wall with LPS (don’t stain stay pink)

17
Q

What is this?

A

strep pneumonia

18
Q

What is this?

someone has pneumonia

A

haemophilus influenza

19
Q

How do you treat a pneumonia with strep pneumonia?

A

benzyl penicillin

ESSENTIALLY amoxicillin

OR if bad co-amixiclav (has clavulanic acid - beta lactamase inhibitor)

20
Q

How do treat an pneumonia with Haemophilus influenza?

A

Amoxicillin

21
Q

How quickly do you results from MCS

A

48h

First 24 to grow organism and identify

Second 24h to identify resistance

DO before given antibiotics

APART from in meningitis (send after)
