MEDIA- NEO MARX Flashcards
The Sutton trust
journalists tend to be white, middle class and male and 50% went to private schools (compared to only 7% of the population) they then unconsciously produce content that promotes ruling class ideologies, Norms and values
Gilroy
Neo Marxist state certain social groups threaten the positions of white, middle class males and are marginalised through media portrayals and stereotyped in negative ways. argues that black crime (particular in the 70s) was a form of political resistance against a racist state and he denies there was a greater criminality amongst blacks people but white people created a folk devil surrounding black people which created deviancy amplification
Hall
supports gilroy by saying black people are stereotyped within the media in 3 ways? As natives, slaves or entertainers. these groups are subject to ridicule which neutralise them as a threat . This reflect an unconscious racism and that black and Asian people are labelled as a problem. E.g. being labelled as trouble makers in news of riots. The stereotypes are prominent in Hollywood so don’t challenge dominant views
Glasgow media group
researched media presentations of different groups. Looked at working class issues like strikes and industrial action. Found recurring themes of immigrants presented as: a burden on welfare and the job market, role of west ignored in reasons for immigration , mixing of forced and economic immigration (leave for diff reasons not just money), benefits of immigration receiving limited coverage (only negative), need for immigrat control shown in media, criminality and threatening numbers (exaggerated)
