MEDIA- feminism Flashcards
Liberal feminist- mulvey
carried out a seminology on Hollywood films rear window and vertigo. These two films demonstrate the male gaze (women in media are viewed from the eyes of straight men, women are presented as passive objects of desire. Forced to view women from view of straight male). Rear window: man watches his neighbours through his window, especially women and talks about the, is a sexualised way “ miss torso” vertigo shows the male control over women’s appearance. Also looked at modern films
Disney princesses (depend on men, young and pretty jasmine in crop top), transformers (sexualised)
Liberal feminist- lauzen
women only accounted for 18% in 2012, 16% in 2014, and 20% in 2018 of all director, producers, writers, cinematographers and editors
Radical feminist- wolf
states women are socialised to conform to the beauty myth where women conform to the male image of what a women should look like in terms of sex appeal, size, shape and weight. Media presents these images as ideal and radical fems see this as a backlash against developments that have been made. Ensure women develop a false class consciousness that distracts them from improving their position in society
Example: women’s magazines ‘drop a dress size overnight’
Radical feminist- Tuchman
Argued the narrow range of roles for women lead to their symbolic annihilation in the media, where mass media omit, trivialise or condemn certain groups that are not socially valued (women)
Marxist feminist- beechey
states women are part of the reserve army of labour as they are available to work when capitalism requires it to continue the economy (brought in economic booms and thrown out during slumps), easy to dump as low paid and less skilled, the media also encourages women to stay at home and take care of their husbands as it makes them more efficient workers.
Post feminist - whelehan
study into men’s magazines such as FHM, maxim and loaded and found they override the message of feminism, states they promote a laddish culture where women are objectified and changes in gender roles can be dismissed as an ironic joke
Post feminism- mcrobbie
Research into girls and women’s magazines over 40 years. Found they have an impact on the identity of their readers, suggest a western version of femininity is presented as ideal/western enlightened values). MagSafe focus on fashion, lifestyle, lov and beauty which promotes hegemonic femininity (Heat and closer) ‘I’m obsessed with looking perfect’, criticising celebs looks and a ‘narrative discontent’ about body image
