MEDIA- Ethnicity (section B) Flashcards
Nationality- vir, hall and foye
ENGLISH: the bbc is said to have a southern English bias and London focus.(holy and Phil, David Attenborough) SCOTTISH: those living in the highlands feel under represented in media coverage. Sport is focused on the English not Scottish. The Scottish are portrayed as drunk and abusive
WELSH: reality tv exploits the Welsh (dirty sanchez and the valleys)
Nationality-mulhurn
critical about media portrayals of the Irish and says that they are stereotyped in 2 ways: as homesick, drinking bad Guinness while listening to bad ballads in north London or too successful to be homesick making megabucks in the city, reporting good wealth home via Skype (naill horanl graham Norton)
Nationality- Graham
Wales- the media can force other nationals into tv programmes leading to tokenism. E.g. gavin and Stacy - portrayed as not intelligent
Traditional- van dijk
did a content analysis in the 1990s over ten years ( longitudinal) ethnic groups portrayed in 5 ways criminals (top boy) abnormal (an idiot abroad critical of eating bugs), a threat (78% of mail on Sunday storied negative about Muslims), dependant (red nose day, white saviour complex) and unimportant (black people in grefell reported less)
Traditional-ligali
states media has been accused of being institutionally racist due to reporting less murders against minority ethnic groups
Traditional- moghissi
Muslims are huddled together by the media despite the range of beliefs between Muslims. There has been a moral panic since 9/11 and media coverage has been very negative
Traditional-husband and Hartman
argue media operates within a culture that sees foreigners as inferior. Media emphasises racial conflict which increases prejudice
Traditional-children now, FairPlay research
studied ethnic stereotypes in video games. 86% of hero’s are white, 8/10 black characters are sport competitors and 86% of black females a victims of violence
Traditional- hall
3 interpretations of black people in cinema: natives, entertainers and slaves as ethnicity is viewed through the white eye. Black people are viewed as dangerous and drug addicts and only excel in sport and music.
Changing- Malik
Chanel 4: majority of white British thought broadcasters reflect Britain but ethnic groups think it was ‘very poor’ . broadcasters guilty of stereotyping and tokenism ( South Park token black, love island only had Samira, simpsons shop owner) but reality tv is increasingly more inclusive ( google box) but there has been a shift in how ethnic minorities are depicted in new media forms (channel 4 has 18% minority groups, bbc 13%)
Changing- barker
in eastenders there is now a range of ethnic minority characters that reflects the demographic of London & they characters are given meaningful attention and stories. But they do stereotype these characters (doctors and shop keepers)
Changing- hall
says there is two types of racism inferential which is unconscious and is driven by the media and perpetuates stereotypes and overt which is intentional behaviour towards a group of people because of race. He argued there has been a shift from overt to inferential
Changing- nayak
Example of hybrid identity: white wannabes, white people, especially working class, acting black through music, language and clothes (examples are Eminem)
Changing- Gill (also burdsey and back)
Example of hybrid identities Survey of British Asian students and identified a number as blasain and brasian as they adopt black styles of dress and language combined with Asian culture. Listened to black music and had friends that were black e.g rap as well as bangra
