Mechanisms of speciation Flashcards
Behavioural isolation
Different mating behaviours differ enough to prevent speciation. i.e calls change, and only attract a subpopulation now
btemporal isolation
breeding occurs at different times, leading to incompatible mating. i.e flowers bloom at different times
ecological isolation
difference in habitat leads to adaptations that seperate a species. i.e altitude adaptations lead to geographical seperation
mechanical isolation
anatomical changes prevent breeding with another species. i.e one insect is physically unable to mate with another
gametic isolation
male gametes cannot recognize, and thus fertilize a female egg. i.e sea animals are very specific about their chemical binds
Zygotic mortality
fertilization is possible, but the genetic differences result in a zygote that cannot develop
hybrid inviability
a hybrid can be developed, but will die before birth or cannot survive in the wild
