Mechanisms of evolution Flashcards
1
Q
natural selection
A
the process of benefiecial genes being favoured in a species, through better traits offering greater chances of reproduction. A subtype is sexual selection, which focuses on constructed mating pressures to create advantageous mating traits.
2
Q
gene drift
A
random chance causing alleles to shift and change. no external pressures cause this, rather random chance and small populations cause it to have stronger effects
3
Q
gene flow
A
the exchange of genes between species populations. can ever cause species to speciate, as the adaptations caused may be negative
