Measuring Reaction Rates C6 Flashcards
What equation expresses reaction rate ?
Rate = amount of reactant used or product formed / time
How can precipitation and colour change indicate the rate?
The product formed is coloured or a precipitate that clouds the solution. A mark made beneath the reactants will disappear and the time for it to disappear, (or appear if the reactants are coloured), will show the rate of reaction.
How can change in mass be used?
The weight of the reactants can be measured with a mass balance for reactions that release gas, which causes the balance to drop. The speed of this indicates the rate. This can be plotted on a rate of reaction graph and is the most accurate method. Though gas is released into the room!
How is volume of gas recorded?
A gas syringe is used to measure te volume given off. The more gas, the faster the reaction. This can be plotted against time on a date of reaction graph. While this is accurate, the plunger could fall out!
