Line Spectrums Flashcards
What flames do sodium, lithium, and potassium produce?
Lithium - Red.
Sodium - orange/yellow.
Potassium - lilac
How does spectroscopy work?
When a compound is heated this supplies electrons with energy.
Electrons release energy as light.
These wavelengths are records as a line spectrum. Different elements emit different wavelengths due to differences in electron configuration. Therefore the patterns are different and different line spectrums are produced. These can be used to identify elements.
A line spectrum will look like…
A series of lines coloured like a rainbow.
Which elements were discovered by their line spectrums?
Caesium and rubidium.
… Was discovered by the sun’s spectrum.
Helium.
Metals can be identified by burning a compound in a … Bunsen flame, causing the element to produce a … With a characteristic …
Blue, flame, colour.
