Me 4.8a Emotion: Theories and Physiology of Emotion Flashcards
emotion
a response of the whole organism, involving
1) physiological arousal,
(2) expressive behaviours, and, most importantly,
(3) conscious experience resulting from one’s interpretations.
Cannon-Bard theory
we experience emotions and physiological reactions such as sweating, trembling, and muscle tension simultaneously.
James-Lange theory
a theory that states that emotions are caused by physiological reactions to external stimuli
two-factor theory
emotions are the result of physiological arousal and a cognitive interpretation of that arousal, meaning we experience an emotion when we both feel physically aroused and label that arousal.
spillover effect
describes how experiences, emotions, or behaviours in one area of a person’s life can influence or “spill over” into other areas, either positively or negatively.
Cognitive appraisal
the personal interpretation of a situation that ultimately influences the extent to which the situation is perceived as stressful.
