MB - Enzymes Flashcards
What is an enzyme?
One or more polypeptide chains forming a catalytic active site
What is a substrate?
A molecule which binds to an active site and undergoes a chemical reaction
What is an Anabolic reaction?
Smaller molecules –> Larger molecules
What is a Catabolic reaction?
Larger molecules –> Smaller molecules
What is the order of Enzyme commission numbers?
- Class
- Subclass
- Sub-subclass
- Serial Number
What are the 2 main things which affect rate of reaction?
- Speed pf 1 reaction (rate constant, k)
- Number of reactions occurring
What are some advantages of using enzymes? (4 things)
- Reusable
- Specific
- Efficient
- Controllable
What is the structure of the active site?
- Contains a 3D arrangement of amino acids
- Contains binding and catalytic residues
- Source of substrate and reaction specificity
What are the 2 models involving substrate specificity?
- Lock and Key
- Induced fit
What is a catalytic triad?
A set of 3 amino acids that can be found in the active site of some enzymes
