Context / need for the project?

A

Voluntary land management effort carried out by DuPont

Maydown is an industrial zone - site of the first DuPont production facility in Europe.

‘Lime Pile’ began as a waste site for slaked lime - a by product in the manufacturing of Neoprene. Site has been unused for over 40 years.

Risks to human health (tresspassers)
Risks to human health (public on foreshore/fishing)
- elevated pH in soils and surface water on site
- exposure to carcinogenic chem - shallow water on site

How did the design address the sensitivity of the site?

A

o Raised hedgerows and banks – space for roots so they don’t go deeper than the capping layer
o Ditches/swales - drainage
o Floating islands – bird nesting and aquatic plant species
o Reedbed – biodiversity and bird nesting
o Ephemeral scrapes / vernal pools - biodiversity
o Species rich wet meadow - biodiversity
o Species rich wildflower hay meadow with bare soil patches - biodiversity
