Matter in Our Surroundings Flashcards
Matter
- Anything that has mass, occupies space and whose presence can be felt.
Particles of matter are…
very small.
Particles of matter have…
space between them.
Particles of matter are continuously…
moving.
Particles of matter attract…
each other.
Melting Point
The minimum temperature at which a solid melts into a liquid at atmospheric pressure.
Boiling Point
The minimum temperature at which a liquid boils into a gas at atmospheric pressure.
Latent Heat of Fusion
The amount of heat energy required to convert 1kg of a solid into a liquid at atmospheric pressure and at its melting point.
Latent Heat of Vapourisation
The amount of heat energy required to convert 1Kg of a liquid into vapour at atmospheric pressure and at its boiling point.
Which has more heat energy? Ice (0°C) or Water (0°C).
Water at 0°C has more heat energy than ice due to the heat gained by water during latent heat of fusion.
To liquify a Gas we need…
[ Mention the pressure and temperature degree ]
High Pressure and Low Temperature
Evaporation
[ Explain ]
- It is the phenomenon of change of liquid into vapour at any temperature below its boiling point.
Factors affecting Evaporation
- increase in Surface Area
- increase in Temperature
- decrease in Humidity
- increase in Wind Speed
Steam at 100°C is better for heating than water at 100°C.
Steam at 100°C has more heat as it has gained heat in the form of latent heat of vapourisation.
