Is Matter Around us Pure? Flashcards
Mixture
[ Define ]
Mixtures are substances constituted by more that one kind of pure form of matter.
Solution
[ Define ]
A solution is a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances.
Alloys
[ Define w/ examples ]
- Alloys are mixtures of two or more metals or a metal and non-metal.
- Its components cant be seperated by physical methods, but it shows properties of constituents.
- Brass - 30% Zinc + 70% Copper.
Components of Solution
The component of a solution that dissolves the other component is called solvent. The component dissolved in solvent is called solute.
1 nanometre in metre is
1nm = 10 -9 Metre
Saturated Solution
A solution that has dissolved as much solute as it is capable of dissolving.
Unsaturated Solution
A solution that has dissolved less solute than its saturation level.
Solubility
The amount of solute present in saturated solution at normal temperature.
Suspension
A hetrogeneous mixture in which the solids are disperses in liquids. The solids dont dissolve in liquids but rather are suspended.
Colloidal Solution
A hetrogeneous solution in which the particles are uniformly spread throught solution.
Components of Colloids
Dispersed medium is the solvent-like component in which the dispered phase (solute-like component) is suspended.
Elements
Element is a basic form of matter that cant be broken down into simpler substances by chemical reactions.
Compounds
Compound is a substance composed of two or more elements, chemically combined with each other in a fixed proportions.
