Gravitation Flashcards
Universal Law of Gravitation
[ State ]
Every object in the universe attracts every other object in the universe with a force that is directly propotional to the product of their masses and inversely propotional to the square of the distance between them.
Value of G was found by…
Henry Cavendish
Value of G
6.673 * 10 -11 Nm2Kg-2
Importance of the Universal Law of Gravitation
- The force that binds us to the earth
- The motion of the moon around the earth
- The motion of planets around the Sun
- The tides due to the moon and the Sun
Weight
The gravitational force by which earth attracts an object is called weight of the object. It’s SI Unit is Newton.
- Weight = mass * gravity
Thrust
The force acting perpendicular to an object is called thrust.
Pressure
The force acting per unit area of an object is called pressure.
[ It is the thrust per unit area. ]
Buoyant Force
The upward force exerted by the water on a immersed body is called as upthrust / buoyant force.
Archimedes Principle
When a body is immersed fully or partially in a fluid, it experiences an upward force that is equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by it.
