Force & Laws of Motion Flashcards
Force
It is the push or pull.
State Newton’s First Law of Motion
- Newton’s First Law of Motion states that,
A body at rest will stay at rest and a body in motion will stay in motion with the same speed and same direction unless acted upon by an external unbalanced force. - Newton’s First Law is also known as the Law Of Inertia.
Inertia
It is the tendency of a body to resist any change in its state of rest or motion.
Inertia - Three types
- Inertia of Rest
- Inertia of Motion
- Inertia of Direction
Mass
[ Relate mass and inertia ]
Mass of an object is the measure of its inertia.
State Newton’s Second Law of Motion
The rate of change of momentum of a body with respect to time is directly proportional to the net external force acting on the body in the direction of force.
Momentum
[Give its definition, unit and formula ]
Momentum of an object is the product of its mass and velocity. It’s SI Unit is kgm/s.
- p=mv
State Newton’s Third Law of Motion
For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
Impulse
[ Define ]
Product of force and the time for which the force acts on body.
- Impulse = F * t
[ f * t = Δp , so Impulse = Change in momentum ]
