Materials Guide Flashcards
What are the rules of the transfer pipette
Make sure the tip is below the level of liquid
Hold the pipette vertically
Do not draw into the pipette pump
What is the volume of measuring pipette
0.01 ml- 25 ml
What are the two types of pipettes
To deliver and to contain
What are the two types of to deliver pipettes
Blowout- designed so that the total volume of fluid is emptied by blowing out the final drop, using a pipette pump
Gravity
How does mL measurements work on pipettes
There is one mL within the space between the markings and the tip.
How do we use a spectrophotometer
A beam of light of a particular wavelength is passed through the pigment solution, then the spectrophotometer measures the portion of light transmitted or absorbed by the pigment
What is a reagent blank
a vial that contains all of the reagents except the reagent being tested
Why do we use micropipettes
we use them for precision as a micropipette can accurately measure as little as 1 microliter
What does the white tip measure
0.5-10 microliters
What does the yellow tip measure
2-200 microliters
What does the blue tip measure
200-1000 microliters
What is a BOD
A biological oxygen demand bottle is a sealed closed container which keeps what’s within a container away from any atmospheric CO2 to accurately measure O2 production
What is a dissolved oxygen meter
A dissolved oxygen meter is responsible for telling us how much dissolved oxygen is within a solution. There is a data meter that reads out temperature and dissolved O2 in mg/L/sec
What is a pipette pump
A pump that is used to fill a pipette
