Lab 10 Flashcards
What is the 23rd pair of chromosomes
It is the allosome and exists in one of two forms, it is either the traditional X-shaped chromosome or is a y-shaped chromosome.
What is the gene we looked at in this lab
We looked at the sex-linked eye colour gene where most males are white eyed.
Why is the traits on the allosome not like the autosomes
It is different because a trait found on one allosome will not be found on another, this creates a situation where the allele that gets contributed from the X chromosomes whether dominant or recessive, will fully be expressed.
What are the male and female chromosomes
Men are XY and female are XX
How do we distinguish between males and females flies
Males have dark boands on teh tip of the abdomen that are darker than females, males also have sex combs
What is the difference between eggs and sperm
Eggs will only contain X, sperms contain either X or Y. Also Y is smaller than X
Hypothesis
Is eye colour an X linked trait in drosophilia
How many Y linked genes are there
78 in humans, mostly used to determine sex
How many X linked genes are there
1100 genes in humans, many genes for characters unrelated to sex
What is the dominant allele
Red eye colour are the wildtype
What is the recessive trait
White eyes
What is the ratio we should see
1:1:1:1
What statistical test did we use
Chi squared
