A
Bacterial infection affecting mastoid bone
-Most common in children

Clinical Features
A
Tenderness and erythema overlying mastoid
Displacement of ear forward
Bulging red tympanic membrane

Investigations
A
BLOODS
-ESR, WBC
CULTURE
- Blood culture (sepsis)
- Fluid from middle ear culture
IMAGING
-CT or MRI if suspect intracranial complications

Management
A
Antibiotics (usually IV then oral)
Surgery if abscess suspected - mastoidectomy

Complications
A
Deafness (both conductive and sensorineural)
Labrinythitis
Osteomyelitis
Cranial nerve palsies
Intracranial spread (meningitis, extradural abscess, cerebral abscess, subdural empyema)
