Mass Wasting Flashcards
Downward motion of rock, ice or snow; commonly through debris flows, landslides, mudflows, rock flows
Mass Movement (mass wasting)
Three Classifications of a Movement
Material type, movement rate, and material motion
Types of Mass Movement
Creep, Solifluction, Rock Glaciers Slumping Lahars and Mudflows Debris Flows Rockfalls and slides
Slow downhill movement of earth material due to seasonal soil expansion and contraction; contains regolith
Creep
Slow Downslope movemnet of saturated surface sediment; common in areas of permafrost - when it melts; not smooth
Solifluction
Moving an entire piece of rock as a coherent block of material sliding down; head scarp, looks like a spoon
slumping
inherently water rich; slurry motion type of mud and water; fine sediment; common in tropical settings CAN BE MAN MADE
Mudflows
Mudflows made of volcanic material
Lahars
Vertical movement; little lateral - bedrock (regolith) moves rapidly downward
Rock falls and slides
Blocks of bedrock slide down a slope
bedrock slides
Turbulent clouds of debris and air; occur in defined chutes; snow
avalanche
Driving forces of mass movement
gravity and friction
