Masdar –located in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates
Describe how clean energy is planned for masdar.
The largest solar farm in the Middle East has been built to power the city. A project is being tested in which a circular field of mirrors on the ground reflect towards a tower in the centre focussing the light in a concentrated beam to drive generators (the temperature can reach 50oC). 14Mw of energy is received from a nearby solar plant.

A variety of electric vehicles and clean-energy vehicles are used for mass transit inside the city (Mitsubishi i-MiEV electric cars were trialled) Similarly Dongtang plans to have Zero-carbon vehicles, pollution-free mass transit, Electric scooters or bicycles and zero carbon technologies.
What green tactic has Masdar employed to reduce energy consumption.
The city is raised on a 23ft high base to maximise cooling by winds and reduce air conditioning use.
Compare the city centre of Masdar and Dongtang.
In masdar an underground transport network will be created and the city centre will be completely pedestrianized with no vehicles in the area. Cars are driverless which are controlled by magnetic sensors that will take users to a requested location. Similary in Dongtang people will arrive on the coast and asked to park their cars, and then will travel by foot, bicycle, or other sustainable public transport. The city will be linked by a network of pedestrian walkways.
Compare building in Masdar to Dontang.
In Masdar buildings are no more than five stories high and streets are narrow so that buildings shade each other. Solar generators are placed on rooftops and solar canopies provide more shade. Similarly in Dontang Buildings will be dense and reduced to 8 stories high, green roofs made turf form natural insulation.
How many jobs will be created by Masdar?
It will be built to create jobs for 100,000 commuters –primarily in the clean energy sector.
How will Masdar push people to live sustainably?
- An effort is made to use recycled materials to build the city.
- Large screens are built above settlement complexes to show energy use. If you are being wasteful it will turn red.
