how does minimum age affect marriage customs and cultural variations
-the minimum age for marriage in Ireland is 18 years of age
-the minimum age restriction is not the same for all countries, e.g. in Sudan the legal marriage age is ten 10 years olds
how does choice of partners affect marriage customs and cultural variations
-in Ireland individuals are prohibited from marrying based on close family relationships including:
consanguinity: blood relationships, e.g. a woman cant marry her child
affinity: a relationship by marriage, e.g. a man cant marry his child’s spouse
-in some cultures individuals do not choose their parents as marriages are arranged
-all societies place some form of restraint on an individuals choice of marriage partner these constraints can be based on religion, socio-economic background or close family relationship
what are the legal requirements for marriage in Ireland
-both partners must be over the age of 18
-both partners must have the mental capacity to understand the nature of marriage
-both partners must be free to marry
-partners must not be closely related by blood or marriage
-both partners must enter a marriage on a voluntary basis. they cannot be forced to marry against their wishes
what are the rights and responsibilities within a marriage in Ireland
-to cohabit together and keep each other company
-to have sexual relations with each other during the marriage
-to show commitment to the marriage and remain faithful and loyal in a relationship
- to provide financial support for dependent spouses and children as set out in the Family Law Act 1976
what are the grounds for divorce
-spouses must have been living apart from one another for two out of three years
-there is no reasonable possibility of reconciliation between spouses
-adequate provisions have been made for the spouse and any dependent members of the family
