Manual Muscle Testing Flashcards
What causes loss of strength?
- neurological injuries
- orthopedic injuries
- congenital deformities
- trauma
Why test muscles?
gives us an idea of where an injury may be and what the functional capabilities are at this point
Testing muscles gives us a ______ for treatment
baseline
What does MMT test?
1) contractibility
2) gravity
3) resistance
Muscles are tested _______
isometrically
Inflammation, pain, recent surgery, osteoporosis are all _______ of MMT
contraindications/precautions
What are some additional contraindications/precautions of MMT?
- dementia
- COPD
- cardiovascular condition
- MS
- arthritis
How do you minimize substitution patterns?
- give good instructions
- proper positioning
- stabilization
- muscle palpation
- pay attn to the WHOLE body
Normal - maintains testing position against gravity and maximal resistance
MMT Grade 5
Good - maintains the testing position against gravity and moderate resistance
MMT Grade 4
Fair - moves the joint through full available ROM against gravity or maintains the testing position
MMT Grade 3
Poor - moves the joint through full ROM with gravity eliminated
MMT Grade 2
Trace - demonstrates no joint movement, but there is a slight observable or palpable muscle contraction
MMT Grade 1
Zero - demonstrates no joint movement and no palpable or observable muscle contraction
MMT Grade 0
