What test should be done immediately?
Finger prick capillary glucose test
What symptoms are commonly present in diabetic patients under the age of 5?
Heavier nappies, blurred vision, candidiasis, constipation, recurring skin infections, irritability, behaviour change
What are the symptoms of DKA?
Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, sweet breath, drowsiness, rapid respiration, coma
What reading on the finger prick capillary test is indicative of diabetes?
> 11mmol/l
Why is insulin injected subcutaneously or intravenously ?
It is inactivated by the GI tract and cannot be taken orally
Name some rapid acting insulins?
Insulin lispro, insulin aspart
Name some short acting insulins?
Soluble insulin, actrapid
Name some intermediate acting insulins?
Isophane insulin
Name a long acting insulin?
Glargine
Define Hypoglycaemia?
An episode of low blood glucose (<4mmol/l) with or without symptoms
When is a hypoglycaemic attack considered severe?
When third party intervention is required
What imbalances may occur to cause hypoglycaemia?
Food - too little/ wrong type
Activity
Insulin - dose or injection technique may be wrong
Who are at risk of hypoglycaemia?
Those with tight glycaemic control, impaired awareness, cognitive impairment, extremes of age, coeliac, pregnancy, hypoadrenalism or malabsorption
What are the severe effects of hypoglycaemia?
Coma, hemiparesis and coma
