Male Reproductive anatomy Flashcards
Describe the skin of the testes?
- Thin
- Rugose
- Pigmented
- Contains dartos muscle but no fat
Which testes usually lies lower?
Left
What is the white fibrous capsule which covers the testes?
Tunica albuginea
What does the spermatic cord travel through?
Inguinal canal passes through inguinal ring
Describe structure of the testes?
- Made up of lobules 200-300
- each lobule contains seminiferous tubules (site of spermatogenesis)
- seminiferous tubule anastomose into plexus called rete testis
- efferent ducts arise from Rete testis these ducts pass into the epididymis (piercing tunica albuginea)
What blood vessels supply the testes?
- Testicular artery branch of inferior mesenteric
- Testicular veins which splits into plexus of veins called pampiniform plexus
- Right testicular vein drains to the IVF
- Left testicular vein drains to the left renal vein
What are the parts of the epididymus?
Head, body and tail
head is only section attached to testes
tail is continuous with vas deferens
Where is the epididymus located?
Posterior border of each testes
What is the function of the epididymus?
sperm storage and maturation until ejaculation
What are the three fascial layers of the spermatic cord?
- External spermatic fascia
- Cremasteric fascia
- Internal spermatic fascia
What structures are in the spermatic cord?
- Testicular artery, cremasteric artery and artery of vas
- Pampiniform plexus of veins, cremasteric vein and vein of vas
- Vas deferens
- cremaster muscle nerve, sympathetic fibres and ilio-inguinl nerve
- lymphatic vessels
What muscle is in the spermatic cord?
Cremaster muscle
What are the relations of the prostate?
inferior to the bladder posterior to pubic symphysis anterior to rectum medial to levator ani muscle superior to external sphincter of bladder
what are the seminal vesicles?
- coiled, sacculated tubes which lie at base of bladder
- join with the vas deferens to form ejaculatory ducts which then travel through the prostate where they join the urethra
What are the parts of the urethra?
- Pre-prostatic: passes vertically through bladder
- Prostatic: travels through prostate gland
- Membranous: pierces external sphincter urethrae
- Spongy: traverse the corpus spongiosum of penis
