Male Repro: Overview and Testes Flashcards
Male Primary Sexual Characteristics
Penis, scrotum, sperm, testes->testosterone
Scrotum
Sac of loose skin, fascia, and smooth muscle divided into two pouches by septum
- contains Dartus Muscle (causes wrinkling)
Temperature regulation of testes
Sperm survival requires 2-3 centigrade lower temperature than core body temp
- Cremaster Muscle
Cremaster Muscle
In spermatic cord, skeletal muscle
- elevates testes on exposure to cold and during arousal
- warmth reverses the process
- contraction raises testicals
Testes
Paired oval glands surrounded by dense white capsule called Tunica Albuginea
- each teste is filled with 2-3 seminiferous tubules where sperm are formed
Tunica Vaginalis
Piece of peritoneum that descended within testes into scrotal sac
- allows for easier movement of testes within the scrotum
Descent of Testes
Develop near the kidney on the posterior abdominal wall
- descends into scrotum by passing through inguinal canal (during 7-8 month of fetal development)
- vaginal process could remain open and patent and abdominal organs could potentially herniate into the scrotum
Gubernaculum
Pulls testicles inferiorly and tunica vaginalis gets pulled with it.
Pathway of Sperm Flow Through the Ducts of the Testis
- Seminiferous tubules
- sperm formation toward Rete Testes through efferent ducts - Epididymis
- Ductus (vas) Deferens
- Ejaculatory Ducts
- Urethra
Epididymis
20 ft coiled tube like structure wrapped along the outside of testes
- stores sperm
- sperm matures here and gains motility
- sperm nourished
-head, body, tail
Ductus (vas) Deferens
moves sperm, pathway of 18in muscular tube, lines by ciliated pseudo-stratified columnar epithelium
- ascends along posterior border of epididymis
- passes through spermatic cord and inguinal ligament
- reaches posterior surface of urinary bladder
- empties into prostatic urethra with seminal vesicle
- convey sperm along through peristaltic contractions of muscle lining
Vasectomy
Surgical procedure to cut and tie the ends of vas deferens
