Malaria Flashcards
Peridomestic
living in or around human habitation
Sylvatic
disease contracted by wild animals
Anthropophilic
go inside people’s houses, they like people
What’s the name of the malaria mosquito?
Plasmodium spp. ~ falciparum (50% of cases, almost all death) ~ vivax (43% cases) ~ malariae ~ ovale ~ knowlesi
Recrudescence
erythrocytic infection falls to subclinical/subpatent levels but is not eliminated then reappears
Relapses
erythrocytic infection is eliminated but dormant hypnozoites in liver reactivate and generate a new erythrocytic infection
Cold stage
shivering, then temperature rises rapidly
Hot stage
peripheral vasodilation (flushed appearance), rapped pulse + high temperature
Sweating stage
copious sweating = fall in temperature
Name the symptomatic stages in Maleria
- hot
- cold
- sweating
Morbidity
the condition of being diseased
Mortality
death
DALYs
a.k.a. disability adjusted life years
The sum of years of potential life lost due to premature
mortality and the years of productive life lost due to disability
List the methods of malaria detection (6).
- presumptive diagnosis
- microscopy
- Qualtitive buffy coat
- Antigen detection
- PCR
- Antibody - ELISA, IFAT
Name the two components of malaria treatement.
- supportive - manage the symptoms
2. specific - eliminate the parasite
