Definitions #3 Flashcards
What causes amoebiasis?
Entamoeba histolytica: an amoeba that causes amoebic dysentery
Dysentery
inflammation of intestine accompanied by diarrhoea often with blood and mucus
Necrotising colitis
damage and inflammation of colon and rectum
Community Environmental Management
~ covering domestic water containers w/ insecticide treated nets
~ personal household protection (vaporisers, repellants, long-sleeves)
~ clean up campaigns (removing waste)
Entomopathogenic fungi
e.g. Beauveria bassiana
~ inhibits Malaria parasite development to infectious stage
Indoor residual spraying
~ insects rest on walls before and after feeding
~ pyrethroids + DDT used
LLIN
~ long-lasting, low toxicity, fast acting chemicals (pyrethroids)
~ work even when mystiques are resistant
~ human efficiency effect (need to sleep under next + repair)
Issue with DDT.
an insecticide that can cause food chain issues so not used even though really effective
IR: genetic mutation
alterations in target site = decreased insecticide binding
IR: metabolic
increase rate of insecticide breakdown through enzyme amplification or modification
Methods used to stop insecticide resistance.
1) rotation
2) combination
3) mosaics
4) mixtures (not yet available)
Insecticide mosaic
The spraying of compound A in one area and compound B in another area
Insecticide mixture
Two or more compounds are mixed within a single product or formulation so that the mosquito is guaranteed to come into contact with both at the same time
Insecticide combination
The use of two or more insecticides
