Major Airport to Major Airport - Phases of Flight Flashcards
What are the three phases of flight?
- Departure
- Enroute
- Arrival
What does the departure phase consist of?
- Three subphases
- Pre-flight
- Takeoff
- Initial climb
What are the three steps of pre-flight?
- Standing
- Pushback
- Taxi
What is the takeoff subphase?
Occurs from application of takeoff power, through rotation, and to an altitude of 35 feet above runway elevation
What is the initial climb subphase?
Occurs from end of takeoff phase to first prescribed power reduction, or until reaching 1000 ft above runway elevation or VFR pattern
What is the enroute subphase for IFR?
Starts at completion of initial climb and continues through cruise altitude to completion of controlled descent to initial approach fix
What is the enroute subphase for VFR?
Starts at completion of initial climb and continues through cruise altitude to controlled descent to VFR pattern altitude or 1000 ft above runway elevation
What does the arrival phase consist of?
- Three subphases
- Approach
- Landing
- Post-flight
What is the approach subphase for IFR?
Occurs from initial approach fix to beginning of landing flare
What is the approach subphase for VFR?
Occurs from point of VFR pattern entry, or 1000 ft above runway elevation, to beginning of landing flare
What is the landing subphase?
Occurs from beginning of landing flare until aircraft exits landing runway, comes to stop on runway, or when power applied for takeoff in case of touch-and-go landing
What is the post-flight subphase?
Taxi and standing
What is top of descent?
Altitude where it minimizes fuel usage, pollution, and noise by having engines at minimum thrust setting from cruise altitude to final approach fix
