Airport Layout, Organization, Circuits, and Lighting Flashcards
What are the three parts of every flight?
Departure, enroute, and arrival
What is a runway?
Defined path for landing, departing, and taxiing
What is a taxiway?
Defined path established for taxiing aircraft
What is an apron?
Part of airport to accommodate loading and unloading of passengers and cargo; refueling, servicing, maintenance, and parking of aircraft; any movement of aircraft, vehicles, and pedestrians necessary for that purpose
What is an intersection?
Any point where any combination of runways and taxiways cross or meet
What is a helipad?
Designated area used solely for takeoff, landing, or parking of helicopters
What is manoeuvring area?
Used for take off and landing, includes runways and taxiways and excludes all aprons
What is movement area?
Includes the manoeuvring area and apron that is used for all surface movement of aircraft
Flight Service Specialist responsibility for traffic movement
Have authority to issue instructions to vehicles, but not to aircraft
Air Traffic Controller responsibility for traffic movement
Have authority to issue instructions to both vehicles and aircraft
How many part are there in a circuit and what are they?
- There are six parts, including four legs
- Downwind Leg
- Base Leg
- Final Approach Leg
- Crosswind Leg
- Departure and overshoot path
- Upwind side
What is downwind leg?
Flight path parallel to landing runway (or landing path)
What is base leg?
Flight path extending from end of downwind leg to extended centreline of approach end of landing runway
What is final approach leg?
Flight path extending from end of base leg in direction of landing to and along extended centreline of runway to threshold of landing runway
What is crosswind leg?
Path joining the departure leg to downwind leg or path joining the upwind side to downwind leg
What is departure and overshoot path?
Path that extends from departure and of the runway along extended centreline to point where aircraft reaches 500 feet AGL and begins crosswind leg
What is upwind side?
Area on opposite side of landing runway from downwind leg
How many types of airport lighting are there and what are they?
- Nine types of lighting
- Obstruction lights
- Approach lights
- Runway touchdown zone lighting
- Runway threshold and end lights
- Runway edge lights
- Runway Centreline lighting
- Runway threshold identification lights (RTILs)
- Taxiway lighting
- Rapid-exit taxiway lighting
What are obstruction lights?
Installed at top of buildings, towers, and equipment to warn pilots of their presence
What are approach lighting?
Helps pilots align aircraft with runway
What are runway touchdown zone lights?
Identify touchdown zone for landing; they are unidirectional and show only in direction of approach to landing
What are runway threshold and end lights?
Present when there is omni-directional approach lighting system or when no approach lighting provided
What are runway edge lights?
Appear at runway edges along full length of runway, except at intersections with other runways or taxiways
What are runway centreline lighting?
Facilitates landing when visibility is obscured
What are runway threshold identification lights (RTILs)?
Required when terrain does not allow the installation of approach lights or other lighting conditions reduce effects of approach lights
What are taxiway lighting?
- Three types
- Taxiway edge lights = blue lights
- Intersection of taxiway and apron = yellow lights
- Centreline taxiway = green lights
What are rapid-exit taxiway lighting?
To reduce aircraft runway occupancy time, some airports provide rapid-exit taxiways; lights are alternating green and yellow lights
