Icing Flashcards
1
Q
What are the four types of icing?
A
- Hoar frost
- Clear ice
- Rime ice
- Mixed ice
2
Q
What is hoar frost?
A
Greyish-white, feathery, crystalline formation that can cover entire surface of aircraft
3
Q
What is clear ice?
A
Clear, glassy, hard ice that forms on leading edges of wings and spreads back over wing surfaces
4
Q
What can clear ice do?
A
- Change the shape of wing leading to reduction in lift
- Increase weight of aircraft resulting in higher stall speed
- Block pilot’s view
5
Q
What is rime ice?
A
Opaque, whitish, pebbly, granular type of ice that forms on leading edges of wings but does not spread back over wing surfaces
6
Q
What is mixed ice?
A
Mixture of clear and rime ice
7
Q
What are the different icing intensities?
A
- Trace
- Light
- Moderate
- Severe
8
Q
What are the requirements for ice to form?
A
- Aircraft must be flying through visible water in form of rain or cloud droplets
- When water droplets strike surface, their temperature or temperature of surface must be 0 degrees or below
