main steam Flashcards
boiling point
liquid boils into its vapor phase. as pressure increases, the boiling temp increases
latent heat of vaporization
energy required to change a liquid’s state to vapor at a constant temperature
saturation
condition in which a mixture of liquid and vapor can exist at a given temperature and pressure
heat exchangers
transfer heat between two fluids (liquid or gas) without allowing either to mix
rankine steam cycle
generation phase, expansion, condensation, feed phase. Process by which thermal energy (steam) is converted into mechanical energy
Generation phase
heated from combustion, heats water into steam atomized fuel sprayed into boiler. atomized fuel mixes with oxygen and combusts after ignition
expansion phase
takes place in steam turbine, heat energy used to turn turbine blades, steam volume increases. After the turbine the steam is in a low pressure, low energy gaseous state
condensation phase
condensed steam affords transfer. occurs in the condenser. latent heat is removed from low pressure steam. via cold seawater heat exchanger (the condenser). energy is lost
feed phase
main feed pump pressurizes the condensed liquid in the feed stage . feed condensed liquid back to the pressurized boiler. energy is lost
superheater
uses exhaust gases from combustion to further heat the steam as it leaves the boiler. to minimize condenser phase inefficiency
economizer
uses exhaust gases from combustion to heat feed water entering the boiler. to minimize feed phase inefficiency
speed changes ( nuclear & conventional)
manually opening and closing throttle valves. Controls the amount of steam admitted to the turbine
Which component converts thermal energy from steam and converts it to rotational energy?
TURBINE (EXPANSION PHASE)
