magnets Flashcards
What is a magnetic field?
The part around a magnet where the effect of magnetism is felt.
Describe the earth’s magnetic field.
Earth’s magnetic field stretches all the way into space. The sun’s energetic particles interact with the magnetic field of earth, we get auroras. Earth’s Magnetic pull is not very strong.
Explain attraction and repulsion in magnets.
Attractions happen when the north pole of one magnet gets close to the south pole, opposites attract. Repulsion happens when either north pole and north pole get close, or south pole and south pole get close, they push away from each other.
What is polarity?
When something has 2 different poles and can attract and repel things.
Describe the domain of a magnetic object compared to an unmagnetized object.
The domain of an unmagnetised object is all arranged in random ways all unorganized so there is no magnetic field. In a magnetized object the domains all organize and arrange so that their magnetic fields align, making a magnetic field go in the same way.
What is a ferromagnet?
Things like iron and rare earth metals that can stay magnetized even without a field. Strong magnetic properties.
Explain magnetic declination.
The angle between magnetic north and true north.
How do you create a magnet?
By exposing ferromagnetic things like iron and nickel to a magnetic field
How do you demagnetize an object?
Heat it to above Curie temperature, strong vibration that can cause reduction to the magnetic field, and by applying an alternating decreasing magnetic field. Drop it strike it or heat it.
What happens if you break a magnet into two pieces?
You will have another set of north and south poles.
Explain how an electric motor works?
It takes electrical energy and turns it into mechanical energy.
What is the difference between a temporary magnet and a permanent magnet?
A temporary magnet is where magnetism can be stopped. A permanent magnet has magnetism all the time and it never goes away.
