digestive reveiw Flashcards
Explain the difference between mechanical and chemical digestion. (make sure to give examples of each).
Mechanical digestion is where you physically break down food, an example is chewing. Chemical digestion is chemically breaking down food. Some examples are stomach acid and saliva.
What part of the digestive system contains bacteria that feed on material passing by?
The large intestine.
What is bile? Where is it produced? Where is it stored?
Bile is a substance that breaks up fat particles and it is produced in the liver. It is stored in the gallbladder.
Where does the majority of chemical digestion occur?
the small intestine
Where does the majority of mechanical digestion occur?
the stomach
What is the function of red blood cells?
To carry oxygen throughout the body
define digestion
Making food smaller so that it can be absorbed into the bloodstream
How does fiber aid in digestion?
it helps you poop
What happens to the water contained in the materials that pass the large intestine?
it gets absorbed into the bloodstream
What is the flap called that seals off your windpipe, preventing food from entering?
epiglottis
_______is a red protein responsible for transporting oxygen in the blood.
hemoglobin
___ blood cells are responsible for fighting off infectious disease.
white
Which organ eliminates nitrogen?
liver
Which organ produces enzymes that help break down starches, proteins, and fats?
pancreas
What are the 3 types of blood vessels?
Arteries- Carry oxygen rich blood away from heart to all body tissues
capilaries -Connect arteries to veins, Thin walls allow oxygen, carbon dioxide, nutrients, and waste to pass to and from cells.
Veins, takes oxygen poor blood back to the heart.
