Magnetism Flashcards
What are the properties of magnets
- They attract ferromagentic materials
- The cause temporary magnetism in ferromagentic materials when in close proximity/touching the ferromagentic material
- When freely suspended magnets line up roughly north to south
- Like poles of magnets repel and unlike poles attract
What is a magnetic field?
A magnetic field is a region in which the atrractive/repulsive forces are experienced
What are magnetic field ines?
Magnetic fields lines are draw to show the direction of a magnetic field at any point
What direction do magnetic field lines point?
They always point north to south. The direction of thefields linesare thesameas thedirectionof theforce experiencedby anorth pole in that magnetic field
Name three types of current carrying conductors and describe how to find the magnetic field they produce
- Long straight wire
- Circular loop
- Solenoid
The right hand grip rule can be used to find the direction of the magnetic field
What is a solenoid?
A solenoid is a coil whose length is longer than the radius of the coil made.
How can you make a solenoid magnetic field stronger?
Place a magnetic core inside it
