Heat Flashcards
What is heat?
Heat is a form of energy that causes a rise in temperature when added or a fall in temperature when withdrawn
What is heat capacity?
The heat capacity of an object is the heat required to change its temperature by 1 Kelvin
What is specific heat capacity?
The specific heat capacity of a substance is the amount of heat energy required to change 1Kg of a substance’s temperature by 1 Kelvin
What is the formula for specific heat capacity?
Q = mcΔθ
[
- Q= heat energy(J),
- m=mass(Kg),
- c= specific heat capacity(J kg-1 K-1),
- Δθ = change in temeprature(K)]
]
What is latent heat?
The latent heat of a substance is the amount of heat energy required to change the substance from one state to another without a change in temperature
What is specific latent heat
The specific latent heat o f a substance is the amount of heat energy require to change 1Kg of a substance from one state to another without a change in temperature
What is the formula for heat change?
Q = ml
[
- Q = heat energy(J), m = mass(kg), l = latent energy(of vaporisatoin
What is conduction?
The passing of heat energy through a solid via the kinetic energy of neighbouring molecules.
What is convection?
The transfer of heat energy through a gas/liquid by the circulation of heated currents of the substance.
Define the ‘solar constant’.
The amount of solar energy hitting 1m^2 of the Earth’s atmosphere every second.
Give the formula for calculating U-value.
U value = P / change in temperature x area
What is the (specific) heat capacity of an object?
The energy needed to change (1kg of) the object by 1K.
