Linear Motion Flashcards
What is a scalar quantity?
A quantity that has only magnitiude and no direction in space
What is a vector quantity?
A quantity that has both magnitude and direction
What is displacement and what is its unit of measurement?
The distance moved in a particular direction. It is measured in metres (m)
What is velocity and what is it measured in?
The rate of change of displacement with respect to time. It is measured in metres per second (ms-1)
What are the two equations for average velocity
- s/t
[s = displacement, t = time]
- (u+v)/2
[u = intial velocity, v= final velocity
What is a constant velocity?
When an object has constant velocity, it does not speed up, slow down or change direction
What is a ticker timer?
A ticker timer is a device with a hammer that strikes every 1/50 seconds. The hammer prints an ink spot on a piece of paper (ticker tape) every time it strikes
What is the equation for accleration?
a = (v-u)/t
- [a = acceleration(ms-2)*
- v = final veloctiy(ms-1)*
- u = intial velocity(ms-1)*
- t = time(s)]*
What are Newtons three equations of motion?
- v = u + at
- s = ut + 1/2at2
- v2 = u2 + 2as
- [a = acceleration(ms-2)*
- v = final veloctiy(ms-1)*
- u = intial velocity(ms-1)*
- t = time(s)]*
Derivation newtons equations of motion?
[Insert Pictures]
What does the slope of distance-time graphs represent?
The speed of an object
What does the slope of a veloctiy-time graph represent?
The accleration of an object
