Macromolecules pt1 Flashcards
Macromolecules are polymers. what is a polymer
long molecules consisting of similar building blocks linked by a covalent bond
what is a Dehydration reaction
removes a water molecule, forming a new bond
whats is hydrolysis
adds a water molecule, breaking a bond
what are Carbohydrates
fuel and building material. includes sugar and polymers of sugars
what are simple sugars
monosaccharides. Glucose is most common. Classified by location of carbonyl group
when is a disaccharide formed
formed when dehydration reaction joins two monosaccharides
storage and structure of polysaccharides
Storage (polymer of a-glucose)= starch, glycogen. structure (polymer of b-glucose)= cellulose, chitin
what is cellulose
is a polymer of b-glucose
what are lipids
does not include true polymers, hydrophobic, (fats, phospholipids, steriods)
saturated fats vs unsaturated fats
unsaturated fats have cis double bond that causes bending
what are Phospholipids
consists of two fatty acids. has a hydrophilic head and a hydrophobic tail
what are Steroids
lipids characterized by carbon skeletons consisting of four fused rings
what are triacylglyceides
triglycerides provide your body with energy, but their main function is to store energy for later use
what are Polypeptides
polymer of amino acid , joined by peptide bonds
what is a protein
molecule made up of one or more polypeptides
